Title

Resolution relating to the City of Milwaukee’s position on Assembly Amendment 6 to Wisconsin Senate Bill 612, relating to the election process and absentee ballots.

                                          

Analysis

This resolution directs the Intergovernmental Relations Division - Department of Administration to support the passage of Assembly Amendment 6 to Wisconsin Senate Bill 612.  This amendment provides that when an eligible voter requests an absentee ballot, the voter will receive an absentee ballot automatically for all elections that are held within the same calendar year.

                                          

Body

Whereas, Eligible voters in the City of Milwaukee in the past have requested absentee ballots sent to them automatically for every election due to age, physical illness, infirmity, disability, or because they are residents of a nursing home, retirement home or community-based residential facilities; and

 

Whereas, Wisconsin Senate Bill 612 relates to voter registration, absentee ballots, pre-elections, election day procedures and post-election procedures, and Assembly Amendment 6 to the bill authorizes, upon written request, an absentee ballot automatically be sent to an elector for every election that is held in the same calendar year; and

 

Whereas, Assembly Amendment 6 is beneficial for voters for whom polling locations are not accessible, as described above, though it still does not provide sufficient flexibility to address the need for absentee balloting on a continuing, long-term basis; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division is directed to lobby for passage of Assembly Amendment 6 to Wisconsin Senate Bill 612.
