Analysis
This resolution renames the decorated tree on display annually in Red Arrow Park during the Christmas season the City of Milwaukee Christmas tree.
Body
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee respects all religious and cultural customs and is desirous of properly naming the publicly displayed symbols of our community’s diverse holiday traditions out of respect for all traditions; and
Whereas, The decorated tree on the corner of Wells Street and Water Street was initially known as a “Christmas tree”, beginning in 1913 when the citizens of Milwaukee first gathered around a brightly lit Christmas tree in what is now Red Arrow Park, and the decorated trees displayed in that same place annually were known as Christmas trees until 1995, when the tree was called a “holiday tree”; and
Whereas, The Common Council wishes to return to this tradition and join numerous other cities, public institutions and millions of American families in celebrating the Christmas holiday season with a Christmas tree; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the decorated tree annually displayed in Red Arrow Park during the Christmas holiday season shall be known as the City of Milwaukee “Christmas tree”.
