Title:
Substitute resolution relating to development of strategies to deal with the number of Milwaukee Police Department call for service assignments by the Milwaukee Public Schools.
Analysis:
This resolution requests the Milwaukee Police Department to work with the Milwaukee Public Schools to develop a strategy to lessen the number of call for service assignments, when appropriate, by the Milwaukee Public Schools to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Body:
Whereas, The Milwaukee Police Department has responded to more than 3,400 call for service assignments to the Milwaukee Public Schools from the start of the 2004/2005 school year in September 2004 through the end of December 2004; and

Whereas, This is a significant use of police service by the Milwaukee Public Schools, which has its own Division of School Safety and Security with a staff of school safety assistants; and

Whereas, The need exists to properly use police resources and coordinate such services with the Division of School Safety and Security for the purposes of lessening the demand of police call for service assignments, when appropriate; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Police Chief is requested to direct police district captains to engage in discussions with Milwaukee Public Schools principals or appropriate representatives from Milwaukee Public Schools to develop strategies to lessen the number of police call for service assignments, when appropriate; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Police Chief or an appropriate designee and the Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent or an appropriate designee is requested to report to the Common Council within 120 days on the results of these discussions and the implementation of strategies with the Milwaukee Public Schools to lessen the number of police call for service assignments when appropriate.
