Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Commissioner of Pubic Works to install fiber and provide network connectivity at the expense of and for the use and benefit of the Marquette University. This will provide Marquette University an entry into the Abilene/Internet2 community to support current research efforts and expand the university's presence within the research and education community.
Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee wishes to promote higher education and enhance educational resources in the community; and

Whereas, Marquette University needs a high speed network connection between Marquette University and WiscNet/WiscREN Point of Presence in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Such a connection will gain Marquette University an entry into the Abilene/Internet2 community to support current research efforts and expand the university's presence within the research and education community. Researchers at Marquette are associated with other high performance centers such as University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Madison Campuses, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of California, Berkeley, Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center of Ohio/Ohio Supercomputer Center, and 32 American Dental Education Association member schools. Current off-campus bandwidth limitations are a bottleneck to successful and efficient collaborations with partners locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; and

Whereas, Internet2 is a consortium being led by 202 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.
