Title
Resolution relative to application for, and acceptance and funding of, a 2004 State of Wisconsin Urban Forestry Grant (Department of Public Works).
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works-Operations Division to apply for, and accept and fund, a 2004 Urban Forestry Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This grant will be used to fund a program to improve the growing environments of downtown street trees in full-sidewalk and box-out situations. The total project cost is $54,285, of which $29,285 (54%) will be provided in-kind by the City and $25,000 (46%) will be provided by the grantor. The street tree program will include the following components:

Train staff, youth and volunteers to utilize the computer software (ArcView/GIS and CITYgreen) necessary to perform a downtown street tree inventory for box-out trees.

Create a Geographical Information System-based inventory of the City street trees in box-out situations in the downtown area, using Milwaukee-area youth.

Use the information gathered to analyze the urban forest cover, the growth rate, the mortality rate and the capital expenditure required per box-out street tree.

Research downtown street tree planting practices in other urban communities.

Create and implement a plan of action to manage downtown Milwaukee's street trees, including the development of City engineering specifications for future tree plantings.
