This resolution supports the University of Wisconsin-Madison's diversity initiative known as Student Shadow Day.

Body
Whereas, True diversity across all lines of identity is of compelling interest to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) and to the state of Wisconsin; and

Whereas, The Student Shadow Day is a student-led diversity outreach program in its first year on the UW-Madison campus; and

Whereas, The Student Shadow Day is a program designed by the Associated Students of Madison's Diversity Committee; and

Whereas, The Student Shadow Day seeks to give all high school students, particularly those who identify as persons of color or lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), interested in attending college, the opportunity to interact one-on-one with current UW students, attend university classes, meet with faculty and staff, and receive help in completing their UW-Madison applications; and

Whereas, Student Shadow Day's mission is to demonstrate the importance of equal opportunity for higher education by presenting resources, sharing information and connecting high school students with college students; and

Whereas, Certain populations of students face significant barriers when trying to access higher education, and these populations are not limited to people of color and LGBT students; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City expresses its support for Student Shadow Day at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to take place on April 25, 2003; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the City of Milwaukee commends the Associated Students of Madison and the UW-Madison administration for taking steps to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for people who are underr...
