A substitute ordinance relating to sign regulations for schools in residential zoning districts.

Analysis
This ordinance permits a church, elementary school, secondary school or college in a residential district to erect a single ground sign on its premises, provided the following conditions are met:
a. The sign does not exceed 24 square feet in size.
b. The premises has at least 240 feet of street frontage.
c. The base of the sign is at least as wide the signable area of the sign.
d. The sign is no greater than 6 feet in height.
e. Any illumination directed at the sign is properly shielded so that the source of the illumination is not visible.
f. The sign is set back at least 30 feet from any residential use.

Body
The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Milwaukee do ordain as follows:

Part 1. Section 295-97-1-a-9 of the code is created to read:
295-97. On Premise Signs.

1. RESIDENCE DISTRICTS. a. Signs allowed.

a-9. Notwithstanding the provisions of par. a-7, a church, elementary school, secondary school or college may erect one ground sign on its premises in addition to any other existing or permitted wall signs, provided:

a. The sign does not exceed 24 square feet in size.

b. The premises has at least 240 feet of street frontage.

c. The base of the sign is at least as wide as the signable area of the sign.

d. The sign is no greater than 6 feet in height.

e. Any illumination directed at the sign shall be properly shielded so that the source of the illumination is not visible.

f. The sign is set back at least 30 feet from any residential use.
