Title
Resolution supporting the continued representation of the City by 2 Congressional districts in the U.S. House of Representatives and directing the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division to lobby for its preservation.
Analysis
This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee's support for the continued representation of the City by 2 Congressional districts in the U.S. House of Representatives and directs the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division to lobby the Wisconsin Legislature for the preservation of 2 Congressional districts representing the City.
Body
Whereas, The U.S. Supreme Court favors preservation of existing Congressional districts whenever possible; and

Whereas, The U.S. Supreme Court has consistently held that states should draw Congressional districts that show respect for communities defined by actual shared interests; and

Whereas, The City is currently represented by 2 Congressional districts, the 4th Congressional district and the 5th Congressional district; and

Whereas, The City is the largest municipality in the State of Wisconsin, serving as the foundation of our state's economic well-being and cultural diversity; and

Whereas, The 2000 U.S. Census clearly demonstrated that both the 4th and 5th Congressional districts represent clear and distinct communities of interest; and

Whereas, The representation of the City of Milwaukee by a single Congressional district would significantly diminish the influence of each of these communities of interest; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City expresses its support for the continued representation of the City by 2 Congressional districts in the U.S. House of Representatives; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division is direct...
