Analysis
This resolution supports the National League of Cities' campaign, "Undoing Racism…Are You Ready…to be Part of the Solution?", which serves as a national focal point of community-led efforts to eliminate racism and promote racial justice. The resolution also authorizes and directs the City Clerk to send a proclamation to the National League of Cities declaring the City's support.
Body
Whereas, The National League of Cities (NLC) led a rally in Washington, D.C., on September 20, 2000, to recognize and support local leadership efforts to fight racism in cities and towns throughout America; and

Whereas, The NLC also instituted a national campaign titled, "Undoing Racism…Are You Ready…to be Part of the Solution?", to serve as a national focal point of community-led efforts to eliminate racism and promote racial justice; and

Whereas, The NLC has called on municipal leaders throughout the country to issue proclamations supporting the campaign and to organize local events in their communities; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee supports this effort and would like to be added to the list of over 300 cities already supporting this effort; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City endorses the following "Milwaukee Pledge" showing its support for racial equality:

THE MILWAUKEE PLEDGE

We believe that every person has worth as an individual.

We believe that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of race or color.

We believe that every thought and every act of racial prejudice is harmful; if it is the thought or act of a City official or employee, then it is harmful to the City as well as to others.
