Body
Whereas, The home deconstruction business, in which materials are salvaged from buildings scheduled for demolition, is a growing field; and
Whereas, Deconstruction allows materials to be salvaged which would otherwise end up in a landfill; and
Whereas, These salvaged materials can be reused in other homes, thereby saving landfill space and reducing housing costs; and
Whereas, The use of reclaimed building material avoids the environmental impact of producing new material; and
Whereas, Through city contracts, the Department of Neighborhood Services provides for the demolition of structures acquired through tax foreclosure, and there are contractors who are able to deconstruct houses prior to demolition; and
Whereas, The determination regarding deconstruction status shall be made by the Commissioner of Neighborhood Services; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Commissioner of Neighborhood Services, where feasible, is authorized to advertise and let contractors salvage reusable material from buildings scheduled for demolition.
