Resolution authorizing the study of a short term disability program as a new employee benefit.
ANLS:
The City currently provides a long term disability program for certain employees that provides income continuation for an employee who cannot work after a 60-day waiting period. A short term disability program typically provides income continuation for an employee who cannot work after a 45-day waiting period. Any change in employee benefits will require labor negotiations with bargaining units.  This resolution authorizes the study of a short term disability program.
BODY:
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee currently does not offer employees a short term disability program; and
 
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee employees could benefit from such an opportunity, especially new employees and those with very limited sick leave balance; and
 
Whereas, The other municipalities and governmental groups offer this to their employees, allowing their employees to fully pay for the benefit; and
 
Whereas, There could be some savings to City employees through a City sponsored or City supported Short-term disability program, not available on an individual basis; now therefore, be it
 
Resolved, That the City of Milwaukee directs the City Attorney's office; the Department of Employee Relations, including both Employee Benefits and Labor Relations; the Budget Office; the comptrollers Office; and, the Legislative Reference Bureau to review current City benefits and report to the Finance and Personnel Committee by January 30, 1999 with a recommendation regarding a short-term disability program.
