Substitute resolution relating to clean-up of the Milwaukee River.

This resolution directs the Department of Public Works to prepare a report examining the feasibility of a number of issues relating to the clean-up of the Milwaukee River from the North Avenue Dam to Lake Michigan including:

1. Constructing an embankment at the south end of the river to prevent silt and other runoff from entering Lake Michigan.

2. Using alternating current to destroy bacteria in the settling tanks.

3. Cleaning out riverbottom sediment from the North Avenue Dam to the south end of the river.


BODY:
Whereas, The clean-up of the Milwaukee River is a major factor in ensuring the City's water supply; and

Whereas, A key aspect in the quality of urban life is the protection and enhancement of the physical environment; and

Whereas, Efforts should be made to improve the overall water quality of the river; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works is directed to prepare a report examining the feasibility of a number of issues relating to the clean-up of the Milwaukee River from the North Avenue Dam to Lake Michigan including:

1. Constructing an embankment at the south end of the river to prevent silt and other runoff from entering Lake Michigan.

2. Using alternating current to destroy bacteria in the settling tanks.

3. Cleaning out riverbottom sediment from the North Avenue Dam to the south end of the river.

; and, be it

Further Resolved, That this study shall include cost estimates for constructing the embankment as well as the use of alternating current; and, be it

Further Resolved, That this study shall be submitted to the Common Council within 50 days of the adoption of this resolution.
