Title
Substitute resolution establishing an anti-virus policy for City information technology systems.
Analysis
This resolution establishes an anti-virus policy for City information systems. Through this policy, the City will establish standards for protecting City information technology systems from potentially malicious programming code that could cause unexpected or undesirable events.
Body
Whereas, The City Information Management Committee is responsible for policy and management of the City’s information resources; and

Whereas, Anti-virus software is an important aspect of computer information system security; and

Whereas, Anti-virus software that is properly managed and updated helps protect the integrity of City data, and safeguard City assets and data against loss, misuse and theft; and

Whereas, The proper reporting and removal of potential viruses is essential to data security; and

Whereas, The City Information Management Committee has prepared a City anti-virus policy, which was approved by the Committee on March 18, 2013; and

Whereas, The scope of this policy includes all computers that are connected to the City network via a standard network connection, wireless connection, modem connection or virtual private network connection; and

Whereas, The anti-virus software requirements outlined in this policy are to provide baseline protection of City data and information systems; and

Whereas, Through this policy, the City will establish standards for the selection and operation of anti-virus software and procedures for dealing with potentially malicious programs on computers connected to the City network to protect from loss of data, staff productivity and reputation; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that a City anti-virus policy, a copy of which is attached to this file, is adopted as City policy.
