Resolution endorsing the League of Wisconsin Municipalities’ “Partnership for Prosperity: An Agenda for a Competitive 21st Century Wisconsin.”
Analysis
This resolution endorses the League of Wisconsin Municipalities’ “Partnership for Prosperity: An Agenda for a Competitive 21st Century Wisconsin,” and calls upon the Wisconsin Governor and Legislature to work collaboratively with municipal leaders to accomplish the critical goals of job creation and economic growth as provided in the “Partnership for Growth.”
Body
Whereas, Thriving municipalities are key to Wisconsin’s long-term economic success; and
Whereas, To compete globally, Wisconsin needs to develop quality communities that can attract and retain talent and enterprise, and spur job creation; and
Whereas, Wisconsin cities and villages provide the core services that businesses and people expect and need from their local governments, including protective services, sewer and water, roads and other transportation, sanitation, recycling, libraries and parks; and
Whereas, It is of utmost importance that the State of Wisconsin invest its limited resources where most of the state’s economic activities are occurring and where most of the jobs are being created as evidenced by the following:
1. Wisconsin’s metropolitan regions account for 75% of the state’s gross domestic product.
2. Wisconsin’s cities and villages are home to 70% of the state’s population, 87% of all manufacturing property, and 89% of all commercial property.
3. Most of the small businesses created in the state get their start in cities and villages.
4. Cities and villages are where nearly all technology-based entrepreneurship and knowledge-based economic activity occurs in Wisconsin.
5. Start-ups and other knowledge-based economic activity occur almost exclusively within cities and villages.
