Analysis

This ordinance clarifies the authority of the commissioner of public works to suspend municipal operations, including suspending public works and closing certain public buildings, during periods of inclement weather. The authority to suspend municipal operations is limited to periods of inclement weather made severe by conditions other than extreme temperatures alone.

Body

The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Milwaukee do ordain as follows:

 

Part 1. Section 309-1-2 of the code is amended to read:

 

309-1. Department of Public Works.

 

2. COMMISSIONER. The department shall be under the supervision of the commissioner of public works. The commissioner shall appoint the directors of the various divisions in the department, except the divisions of infrastructure services and water works. The commissioner shall have supervision over the division directors and all department employes, except as otherwise provided by s. 8-07 and s. 14-12.5 of the charter. The commissioner shall have charge and custody of all physical property of the city, other than records, not assigned to some other officer or employe. >>The commissioner shall have the authority to suspend public works and close public buildings, except public buildings under the care and supervision of other officers, during periods of inclement weather made severe by conditions other than extreme temperatures alone.<<
