Title
Resolution authorizing the Commissioner of Health to enter into grant agreements to carry out the purposes of the Healthy Food Establishment Special Fund.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Commissioner of Health to enter into grant agreements similar to the agreement in Exhibit A to provide reimbursable grants of City funds. Grants may be awarded to carry out the purposes of the Healthy Food Establishment Special Fund in the Health Department’s budget (Special Fund R201) as outlined in this resolution.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Milwaukee’s 2026 Adopted budget includes funding appropriated to support access to fresh foods and groceries appropriated to the Milwaukee Health Department in Special Fund R201; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 Community Health Assessment developed by the Health Department recognized that “access to…nutritious food” is a critical factor in overall community health and wellbeing; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 Community Health Assessment identified areas of Milwaukee with higher rates of food insecurity and recognized access to healthy nutritious food as critical for community health; and
WHEREAS, access to healthy and nutritious food can have a positive impact on chronic disease and maternal child health, two of the major issues identified in the 2025 Assessment; Now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, by the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Commissioner of Health and appropriate City officials are authorized to execute grant agreements with qualified recipients, substantially similar to the agreement in Exhibit A, to support and increase access to healthy and nutritious food.
