This ordinance changes the name of West Plymouth Street, a block-long public way in the Hillside Terrace housing development, to West Rev. Cecil A. Fisher Lane. Rev. Fisher was a charter commissioner of the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee and served as the Authority's chairman from 1952 to 1971.


BODY:
Whereas, The Rev. Cecil A. Fisher was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, on November 30, 1899; and

Whereas, Rev. Fisher earned his doctor of divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois; and

Whereas, In 1927, Rev. Fisher moved to Milwaukee to serve as pastor of St. Mark's African Methodist Episcopal Church, a position he held until 1931, when he became a social worker for Milwaukee County; and

Whereas, Rev. Fisher was appointed as one of the first commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee when the Authority was created in 1944; and

Whereas, Rev. Fisher served as chairman of the Housing Authority from 1952 until 1971; and

Whereas, During his years of service to the Housing Authority, Rev. Fisher worked to ensure fair housing opportunities for all Milwaukeeans; and

Whereas; In addition to his work for the Housing Authority, Rev. Fisher's outstanding record of community service included offering educational and financial assistance to Milwaukee youth who wanted to further their educations, as well as participation in such organizations as the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, the Land Commission of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Urban League, the Milwaukee branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the local Young Men's Christian Association; and

Whereas, Rev. Fisher passed away in Milwaukee on September 6, 1971; and
