Substitute resolution directing the Department of Public Works to pick up and responsibly dispose of Christmas trees.
Analysis
This resolution directs the Department of Public Works to collect used Christmas trees and dispose of them in compliance with the Department of Natural Resources’ rules.
Body
Whereas, The Department of Public Works has historically collected discarded Christmas trees as part of its regular garbage collection activities, and
Whereas, Taking discarded Christmas trees to a collection site for proper disposal may be a hardship for many residents; and
Whereas, Improperly discarded Christmas trees will be unsightly if they remain in the public right-of-way all winter; and
Whereas, Abandoned Christmas trees in the public right-of way may create a safety hazard by interfering with snow and ice removal operations; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works is directed to collect discarded Christmas trees left at residents’ normal garbage collection points, as well as trees found in vacant lots and other locations in the public right-of-way, from December 26, 2023 through April 1, 2024; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works is directed to dispose of the collected trees in a manner that is compliant with Department of Natural Resources requirements; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works shall treat this collecting and disposing as a pilot program and report back to the Common Council with a plan for the year-round collection and responsible disposal of yard waste.
