This resolution expresses the Common Council's support for the construction of a new Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School to provide the opportunity for the youth of Milwaukee to pursue state-of-the-art technical and industrial education in order to qualify for family supporting jobs in the skilled trades and other technical occupations.
BODY:
Whereas, There is an acute shortage of skilled workers in the Milwaukee metropolitan area which will intensify as over 8,000 skilled tradesmen retire during the next 10 years; and
Whereas, The skilled trades and other technical occupations provide family supporting wages and benefits; and
Whereas, Technical and industrial education provides students with life-long, transportable skills and an appreciation of the dignity of work; and
Whereas, The Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School has historically been an important source of youth for apprenticeships; and
Whereas, The Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School physical plant is no longer capable of providing twenty-first century technical education; and
Whereas, The youth of Milwaukee should be provided the opportunity to pursue state-of-the-art technical and industrial education; and
Whereas, At its delegate meeting of January 7, 1998, the Milwaukee County Labor Council AFL-CIO adopted a resolution pledging to use its influence and capacity to work with others in the community, including the Milwaukee Building and Construction Trades Council AFL-CIO and the Milwaukee Area Technical College, to ensure that a new Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School will be constructed in a neighborhood easily accessible to the city's youth; now, therefore, be it
