Resolution relating to the display of a Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness flag.

Analysis

This resolution authorizes a flag symbolizing Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness to be flown, hung or displayed at City buildings and facilities each year during Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Month.

Body

Whereas, According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 20 veterans die by suicide each day in the United States, a rate that is 1.5 times greater than that of non-veterans; and

 

Whereas, Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Month is an annual observance to honor the courage of millions of American veterans living with mental health conditions and to celebrate the loved ones and professionals who support them; and

 

Whereas, Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Month is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health treatment; and

 

Whereas, Common Council File Number 240816 adopted September 24, 2024 designated November as Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Month; and

 

Whereas, Milwaukee activist Tracey Dent has designed a flag which represents all branches of the United States military; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness flag depicted in Exhibit A attached to this file may be flown, hung or displayed at City buildings and facilities each year during Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Month.
