AMBULANCE SERVICE BOARD
|
Minutes note: Appearing:
Asst Chief Joshua Parish
Marquette University Rana Altenberg
Asst Chief Marquette Police Jeffrey Kranz
Marquette University Avary Benavides-Shefland
MU students asking Chief Parish on the idea to start their own Emergency Medical Services. ran and staffed by students. Their desire was to really focus on the campus property, which includes the area just west of Sinai and then also some of their sports fields down in the valley. Students are nationally registered EMTs. it really fits into both our desire to really engage the community in some of these services. It definitely fits one of those employment needs that we have.
Recruiting has always been a challenge for the fire department, some of that peer influence by the students really providing that service for themselves, whether they're looking to focus on emergency medical services or some of the other levels of practice, nursing, physician's assistance, pre-med, that's also offered at the school. The Milwaukee Fire Department wants to support the Jesuit Mission, if Marquette wants to incentivize and support their students in providing some of the essential services that direct student community and the near community needs. They would not be a transporting service at this time. They are looking to equip the students to respond rapidly. Logistics for vehicles are still being worked on, but MU administration is in full support of the program as well as the fire department.
Ms. Benavides-Shefland, whose created the idea, said that they will be providing emergency medical responder or EMR level of service, to respond Dr. Colella's question.
The communication logistics is being discussed and reconfigured to interconnect the two systems including the police department. In regards to service director, medical director, licensure of the state and operating guidelines, Aurora and Dr. Ann Johnson from Sinai Emergency department have agree to fill in these roles.
In regards to the oversight from public safety. It is unusual for a EMS agency to have oversight from a law enforcement agency, said Dr. Weston.
Currently Marquette University PD is a 24-7 operation that runs the dispatch and sends police officers to any medical calls within their community. They also have a division of students that they oversee for transportation services, said MU Asst Chief Kranz,
They have looked at programs like this in other states, such as University of Rochester with a non-transport entity, Georgetown they actually do transport and have a couple of ambulances.
