Whereas, The City of Milwaukee will receive settlement funds as a result of the class-action lawsuit from the Multi-District Litigation No. 2:18-mn-2873, which is a multi-billion dollar federal litigation related to the PFAS contamination of drinking water and various products; and

Whereas, In the past year, multiple grocery stores serving low-income communities in the City of Milwaukee have closed; and

Whereas, Populations with limited access to grocery stores are more likely to suffer from high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other negative health outcomes; and

Whereas, A grocery store retention fund would help populations located in food deserts by anchoring grocery stores and ensuring residents have access to fresh foods; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the proper City officials are authorized to accept the funds received as a result of the settlement of claims arising from Multi-District Litigation No. 2:18-mn-2873 and to allocate $1 million into a grocery store retention fund; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the grocery store retention fund shall be created in the Office of the Common Council - City Clerk; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the City Comptroller is authorized and directed to establish the necessary accounts and accounting procedures to carry out the intent of this resolution.
