This resolution directs the Department of Public Works - Forestry Division to submit a plan for implementation of a tree memorial program which would permit citizens to pay for the planting of trees on city property in remembrance of a deceased person or to commemorate a special event. The Division shall submit the plan to the Common Council by January 1, 1998.
BODY:
Whereas, A number of cities currently operate successful tree memorial programs; and

Whereas, The City of Chicago Park District's program enables citizens to pay to have trees planted in Chicago's 500 area parks and is currently in its second successful year of operation; and

Whereas, A tree can serve as a meaningful, living memorial to a decreased person or to commemorate a special event and in future years can be visited by friends and family; and

Whereas, A tree can serve as a living memorial for many years with few maintenance needs; and

Whereas, Trees beautify a city and add to the quality of life for all citizens, as well as benefiting the environment by improving air quality and providing needed shade; and

Whereas, Trees reduce soil erosion and the flow of fertilizers and other pollutants that can be washed off lawns and flushed into storm sewers and drains; and

Whereas, Allowing citizens to pay for the planting of trees on city property through a tree memorial program will benefit the City of Milwaukee, both budgetarily and aesthetically; now, therefore, be it
