This charter ordinance provides that a 3/4 vote of the members of the common council will be required to increase the number of common council districts if the most recent federal census reported a decline in the city's population.
BODY:
The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Milwaukee do ordain as follows:
Part 1. Section 1-03 of the charter is renumbered 1-03-1.
Part 2. Section 1-03-2 of the charter is created to read:
1-03. Alteration of Common Council Districts.
2. An increase in the number of common council districts shall require at least a 3/4 vote of the members of the common council at the time of the vote if the most recent federal decennial census has reported a decrease in the city's population.
Part 2. This is a charter ordinance and shall take effect 60 days after its passage and publication, unless within such 60 days a referendum petition is filed as provided in which event this ordinance shall not take effect until submitted to a referendum and approved by a majority of the electors voting thereon.
