This resolution authorizes a total payment of $40,000.00 from the Damages and Claims Fund, for the purpose of settling the claims filed relative to the police stop and detention of Barbara J. Brown, to the claimant and the claimant's attorneys.
Body
Whereas, Ms. Brown was stopped and detained by Milwaukee police officers on January 29, 1998, and she claims that she was unlawfully stopped and that the officers used excessive force, and she has incurred over $30,000 in attorneys fees to date; and
Whereas, It is in the City's best interests to settle this case for a total sum of $40,000.00; and
Whereas, The City Attorney recommends and the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee deems it expeditious and just to pay this settlement; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the proper City officers be and are hereby authorized and directed to authorize the expenditure of one City check in the amount of $40,000.00, made payable to Barbara J. Brown and First, Blondis, Albrecht & Novotnak, S.C., in full and final resolution of this claim, said amount to be charged to the Damages and Claims Fund, Account No. 0001-1490-0001-S118-006300.
