This resolution support using a portion of the Frank P. Zeidler Municipal Building as an Early Childhood Education facility to be used by the Milwaukee Public School district.
BODY:
Whereas, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has determined that, in order to meet the needs of parents for greater educational options, a wide variety of new schools should be established in the City; and
Whereas, Locating new schools and expanding existing schools in non-traditional settings has proven to be an effective tool, as illustrated by the conversion of a former Milwaukee County hospital into Grand Avenue Middle School, and the use by Hi-Mount School of space provided by St. Catherine's and Community Baptist Church; and
Whereas, Discussions between the Superintendent of MPS and City officials have resulted in the identification of the 1st Floor of the Frank P. Zeidler Municipal Building as a potential site for an Montessori School consisting of two classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a play area; and
Whereas, That the 1997 city budget includes $8.5 million in borrowing authority for MPS facility needs of which $2 million is allocted for "Building Alterations and Modifications"; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee supports the designation of a portion of the Frank P. Zeidler Municipal Building as an MPS Montessori School consisting of two classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a play area; and be it
