Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works-Operations Division (Sanitation Section) to apply for, accept and fund, a 2005 Innovation Pilot Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency titled "Milwaukee Clean Collections Awareness Campaign". This grant will be used to fund a one-year public awareness campaign on waste reduction techniques, which will occur in conjunction with changes in the City's waste collection procedures and implementation of new set-out standards for brush and bulky items. The total project cost is $75,000, of which 100% will be provided by the grantor. No City matching funds are required.

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee appears to be eligible for a 2005 Innovation Pilot Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works-Operations Division (Sanitation Section) would use such a grant, to be known as the "Milwaukee Clean Collections Awareness Campaign," to educate the public on waste reduction strategies and changes in the City's waste collection operations; and

Whereas, This educational effort would include the following components:

1. Conduct a public awareness campaign on waste reduction techniques which is targeted at Milwaukee's youth audience through a partnership with Strive Media Institute and its local for-teens, by-teens magazine (Gumbo Magazine) and television show (Gumbo TV).

2. Highlight changes in the City's waste collection procedures and explain new set-out standards for brush and large, bulky items in all waste education and awareness materials.
