This resolution supports the passage of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 623 relating to the creation of an optional holiday for state employes to observe the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez.
BODY:
Whereas, On December 30, 1999, Wisconsin Assembly Bill 623 was introduced to the state legislature, being a bill relating to the creation of an optional state holiday to observe the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez; and
 
Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez (born March 31, 1927, died April 23, 1993) was a passionate and tireless advocate for the rights of migrant workers; and
 
Whereas, In 1962, Cesar E. Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association, an organization later known as the United Farm Workers, that remains one of the most effective voices for farm laborers in the country; and
 
Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez's now-famous 1965-1970 nationwide boycott of table grapes brought unprecedented attention to the low wages and poor living conditions of many California workers; and
 
Whereas, Throughout his life, Cesar E Chavez demonstrated a commitment to the principles of non-violence and peaceful change; and
 
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the life and work of Cesar E. Chavez be honored with a state holiday; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council supports the passage of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 623 and the creation of an optional state holiday to observe the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to all the sponsors of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 623.
