Title

Resolution directing the Department of Public Works and the Department of Administration to create and present a plan to the Common Council for activating City-owned play spaces.

 

Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of Public Works and the Department of Administration to collaborate on and present a plan to the Common Council for using existing City and community resources to activate City-owned play spaces and encourage their use by children.

 

Body

Whereas, The 2020 Adopted City Budget contains a footnote (Footnote #3), instructing the Department of Public Works and the Department of Administration to create and present a plan to the Common Council for activating City-owned play spaces; and

 

Whereas, A resolution is required to effectuate the intent of this footnote; and

 

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee owns 95 recreational facilities including children's play areas, passive areas, playgrounds, and playfields; and

 

Whereas, These facilities are well distributed throughout the City; and

 

Whereas, Creative, outdoor play has been shown to be a critical part of child development; and

 

Whereas, Outdoor play has been linked to decreases in childhood aliments like obesity as well as greater overall-heath; and

 

Whereas, Lower-income children have access to fewer play spaces, often with inferior amenities; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council directs the Department of Public Works and the Department of Administration to collaborate on and present a plan to the Common Council for using existing City and community resources to activate City-owned play spaces and encourage their use by children within 4 months of the adoption of this resolution.
