Substitute resolution designating September 29, 2015 as the Milwaukee Day Without Violence.
Analysis
This resolution designates September 29, 2015 as the Milwaukee Day Without Violence to promote non-violence in the city of Milwaukee. It also urges all city residents, neighborhoods, non-profit and faith-based organizations to join in the effort to reduce violence in the city.
Body
Whereas, According to the Prevention Institute, the root causes of violence include conditions such as poverty and economic inequity, oppression and poor mental health; and
Whereas, Low-income communities, people of color, women and youth all are disproportionately affected by varying types of violence due to the interplay of the root causes; and
Whereas, Violence is preventable; however, its prevention requires investment of resources, people, leadership and commitment; and
Whereas, The level of commitment for violence prevention depends on a combination of community and systemic action, along with a focus on family and individual resiliency; and
Whereas, Additional violence-prevention efforts, strategies, and programs are necessary to create comprehensive solutions for reducing violence within the city of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Residents in Milwaukee can engage in collaborative efforts and activities on a day without crime as a way to promote non-violence; and
Whereas; Acknowledging a day without violence is a way to proactively demonstrate the importance of a zero-tolerance for violence in the city of Milwaukee; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council designates September 29, 2015 as the Milwaukee Day Without Violence; and, be it
Further Resolved, That community leaders, members and organizations are urged to participate in activities in which support the practice of non-violence in the city of Milwaukee; and, be it
