Title
Resolution declaring Milwaukee an Employer of National Service.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the proper City officials to apply to the Corporation for National and Community Service for the City to be designated an Employer of National Service. This would encourage alumni of AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and other national service agencies to apply for positions with the City.
Body
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee celebrated April 6, 2016 as Milwaukee’s Recognition Day of National Service; and
Whereas, The City, via federal grants, is funding five AmeriCorps positions with My Brother’s Keeper organizations, including Running Rebels, the Office of Violence Prevention, Legal Action Wisconsin, Employ Milwaukee, and the Legacy Redevelopment Corporation; and
Whereas, More than one million Americans have participated in AmeriCorps since 1994, and 215,000 have participated in the Peace Corps since 1961; and
Whereas, Employers of National Service connects AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni with employers from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, thereby increasing employers’ access to a dedicated, highly qualified, and mission-oriented pool of potential employees, and providing national service alumni additional opportunities to apply their skills in the workplace; and
Whereas, By attaining Employer of National Service designation, the City can expand its pool of qualified employment candidates, including AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City desires to be an Employer of National Service; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the proper City officials shall apply to the Corporation for National and Community Service for the City to be designated an Employer of National Service.
