Whereas, The Wisconsin state legislature is currently deliberating 2 bills (Assembly Bill 112 and Senate Bill 48) relating to the creation of an optional state holiday to observe the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez; and

Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez (born March 31, 1927, died April 23, 1993) was a passionate and tireless advocate for the rights of migrant workers (the forgotten people); and

Whereas, In 1962, Cesar E. Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association, an organization later known as the United Farm Workers, and in so doing built not only a union but a movement of all races to continue the never-ending struggle of defending workers' rights, civil rights and human rights; and

Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez taught the disenfranchised and forgotten to march and use their strength in non-violent ways and to use the principles he taught to secure justice for all people; and

Whereas, His passing has united the Latino community to continue the fight for his goals, ideals and principles – justice on the job and a better life through the organization of unions in the workplace; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the life and work of Cesar E. Chavez be honored with a state holiday; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council supports the passage of both Wisconsin Assembly Bill 112 and Senate Bill 48 and the creation of an optional state holiday to observe the birthd...
