This resolution renames City Hall Room 301-B the International Summit Room and the Common Council Chamber Anteroom the International Accord Anteroom in commemoration of the historic summit and accord- signing attended by President Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl that took place in City Hall on May 23, 1996.
BODY:
Whereas, On May 23, 1996, President Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl held a summit meeting in City Hall Room 301-B to discuss the Open Skies Agreement between the United States and Germany, expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, upcoming Russian elections, recent events in Bosnia and a variety of other economic and foreign policy issues; and
Whereas, On May 23, 1996, President Clinton and Chancellor Kohl also held a media conference in the Common Council Chamber, where they signed 2 aviation accords, the Open Skies Agreement and an air safety agreement, which pave the way for safer, less- regulated air travel between the United States and Germany; and
Whereas, The May 23, 1996, summit and accord-signing were significant, historic events at the international and national levels and, particularly, to the city of Milwaukee, its residents and its center of government, City Hall; and
Whereas, It is fitting that City Hall Room 301-B and the Common Council Anteroom be renamed to commemorate the events that occurred at City Hall on May 23, 1996; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that City Hall Room 301-B is renamed the International Summit Room and that the Common Council Chamber Anteroom is renamed the International Accord Anteroom.
