Title
Substitute resolution relating to the creation of a pilot Active Streets program.
Analysis
This resolution approves the Milwaukee Active Streets pilot program, a partnership between the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County Parks that will close 10 miles of streets to through motor vehicle traffic to allow pedestrians and cyclists more space to socially distance while outdoors.
Body
Whereas, An effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19 is for individuals to maintain a distance of 6 feet from one another when in public spaces; and
Whereas, Milwaukee has numerous trails and parkways that have been overcrowded and are expected to maintain higher traffic as the weather warms in the summer months; and
Whereas, Providing more spaces within the city for individuals to walk or ride bicycles will reduce overcrowding in parks and on trails, and provide the space for individuals to maintain the recommended 6-foot distance from one another; and
Whereas, The Milwaukee Active Streets program will close 10 miles of street to through motor vehicle traffic and open those streets for pedestrians to walk, run, bike, rollerblade or skateboard while maintaining social distancing; and
Whereas, More available spaces for pedestrians to utilize is in accordance with the Milwaukee Pedestrian Plan, while simultaneously helping slow the spread of COVID-19; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Active Streets pilot program, in substantially the same form as attached to this file, is approved.
