Analysis
This resolution establishes a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and the City of Galway, Ireland. The resolution also rescinds Common Council Resolution File Number 990612, adopted on October 9, 1999, establishing a sister city relationship between Milwaukee and Athlone, Ireland.
Body
Whereas, The City of Galway, Ireland, was founded in the 13th century by Anglo-Norman settlers on the eastern bank of the River Corrib; and

Whereas, Incorporated as a city in 1484, Galway is rich in heritage as it is in modern attractions; and

Whereas, Today, Galway is a vibrant, bustling center of the arts and commerce; and

Whereas, A census in 1996 revealed Galway to be one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, rising from 50,853 inhabitants in 1991 to 57,241 in 1996; and

Whereas, Galway is a cultural Mecca, attracting thousands of people every year to the many festivals hosted by the city, including the Galway Film Fleadh, the Galway Arts Festival, the Galway Races and the Oyster Festival; and

Whereas, In addition to its status as a center of language, art and culture, Galway is home to nearly 13,000 students, many of whom attend the National University of Ireland, Galway; the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology; or one of the many language schools in the area; and

Whereas, Representatives of the Irish-American community in Milwaukee have expressed their desire to develop a sister city relationship between Milwaukee and Galway; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee is committed to a sister city program that enhances global understanding, encourages mutual education, develops cultural exchanges and increases economic development opportunities; and
