Resolution relating to the Milwaukee Fire Department's acceptance and funding of the Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. (Fire Department)
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) to accept and expend the Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the amount of $787,500 with a city share of $236,250 and a grantor share of $551,250. The funds will be used to purchase 175 hand-held radios and related accessories.
Body
Whereas, The Milwaukee Fire Department has been selected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to receive a 2004 Assistance to Firefighters grant for enhancing firefighter safety and the ability to respond to emergency incidents; and

Whereas, Presently, each emergency apparatus is equipped with one or two hand-held radios, but fire apparatuses are staffed with four or five personnel, and paramedic units are staffed with two personnel; and

Whereas, Equipping all emergency responders with portable radios would provide them with the capabilities to relay and receive pertinent and vital information, regardless of incident type or magnitude; and

Whereas, The grant would be used to purchase 175 hand-held radios and related equipment; and

Whereas, The operation of this grant project from 7/01/04 to 6/30/05 would cost $787,500 of which $236,250 (30%) would be provided from the city and $551,250 (70%) would be provided by the grantor; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Fire Department is authorized to accept and expend this grant without further approval unless the terms of the grant change as indicated in Section 304-81, Milwaukee Code; and, be it
