Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works to expend $10,000 in unanticipated revenue on recycling education and outreach efforts. This revenue was received from the 2004 National Cans for Cash Challenge.
Body
Whereas, Section 304-91 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances establishes procedural guidelines related to the expenditure of funds to be reimbursed by greater than anticipated revenues; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works has received $10,000 in unanticipated revenue from winning the 2004 National Cans For Cash Challenge sponsored by the U.S. Congress of Mayors and Alcan Corporation; and

Whereas, As part of this competition, the City of Milwaukee established a new Guinness World Record for longest consecutive line of aluminum cans when, on November 13, 2004, over 60 volunteers assembled a line of 33,952 cans through the City's Northwest Garage facility; and

Whereas, Under the City's current recycling contract, the City receives a portion of the revenues from the sale of marketable recyclables, meaning that the more recyclables the City collects, the more money the City receives; and

Whereas, For this reason, recycling is beneficial not only for protecting the environment and reducing landfill space consumption, but also for the City's bottom line; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works desires to use the unanticipated revenue from the Cans for Cash Challenge to fund recycling education and outreach efforts targeting Milwaukee schools and residents; and

Whereas, The Comptroller has certified that greater than anticipated revenue in the amount of $10,000, pursuant to s. 304-91,
