Analysis

This resolution amends the City of Milwaukee’s State Legislative Package to express support for legislation requiring the installation of speed-limiting devices on vehicles owned by those repeatedly convicted of reckless driving.

Body

Whereas, The city-wide epidemic of reckless driving has caused death and injury to dozens of Milwaukee residents and contributed to a climate of danger and disorder on roadways and in public spaces; and

 

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee has and will continue to pursue all available means to combat reckless driving, including by increasing penalties for reckless driving offenses and seeking state and federal resources to deter and prosecute dangerous driving; and

 

Whereas, Wisconsin lawmakers have introduced legislation similar to that adopted in the states of Maryland, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia to require the installation of speed-limiting devices in any vehicle operated by habitual reckless drivers; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that Common Council File Number 241415, adopted January 21, 2025, is amended by inserting the following item into the document attached to the file titled “2025-26 State Legislative Package”:

 

Public Health and Safety

Common Council

Support legislation requiring the installation of speed-limiting devices on vehicles owned by those repeatedly convicted of reckless driving.

 

; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the City Clerk shall forward copies of this resolution to members of the City of Milwaukee’s delegation to the Wisconsin Legislature.
