Title
Resolution relative to application for, acceptance and funding of a 2005 State of Wisconsin Urban Forestry Grant.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works-Operations Division to apply for, and accept and fund, a 2005 Urban Forestry Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This grant will be used to fund a program to expand a computerized inventory of the location and health of City street trees in the Central Forestry District (broadly defined by Congress Street to the north, the Menomonee River to the south, Lake Michigan to the east and the City of Wauwatosa border to the west). The total project cost is $50,000, of which $25,000 (50%) will be provided in-kind by the City and $25,000 (50%) will be provided by the grantor. The street tree inventory program will include the following components:

Train staff and urban forestry interns to utilize the computer software (TreeSavvy) necessary to perform a tree inventory of street trees located in the Central Forestry District.

Expand a Geographical Information System-based inventory of City street trees located in the Central Forestry District area, using staff and urban forestry interns.

Use the information gathered to analyze the urban forest cover, the growth rate, the mortality rate and the capital expenditure required per street tree.

Research tree inventory practices in other urban communities, such as Minneapolis and Cleveland, that use the TreeSavvy inventory software.

Create and implement an action plan that fully utilizes the data collected to improve daily management of Milwaukee's Central Forestry District street trees.
