Analysis
This resolution approves the relocation of the statue of General Douglas MacArthur from MacArthur Square to the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center grounds at a site to be determined by Milwaukee County and the board of the War Memorial Center.
Body
Whereas, MacArthur Memorial Week, recognizing the “MacArthurs of Milwaukee”, will take place on June 3-7, 2014, in various events at the War Memorial Center and the Marquette University Law School; and

Whereas, The magnificent, 9½-foot bronze statue of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, sculpted by Robert Dean, was unveiled by Mrs. Douglas MacArthur and dedicated in a ceremony on June 8, 1979 at MacArthur Square; and

Whereas, The cost of the statue was paid by private donations, including particularly from the late Marie Uihlein, with no expense to taxpayers; and

Whereas, The MacArthur statue is presently located in an obscure area where few people have an opportunity for viewing it; and

Whereas, Various veterans organizations, led by the Veterans Community Relations Team, have recommended that the MacArthur statue be relocated and rededicated on a lakefront site north of the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center during the MacArthur Memorial Week; and

Whereas, MacArthur Square is owned by the City of Milwaukee; and

Whereas, The Veterans Community Relations Team has secured necessary funding and support to move the MacArthur statue to the War Memorial Center grounds at no expense to the City of Milwaukee; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee approves the relocation of the MacArthur statue to the War Memorial Center grounds at a site determined by Milwaukee County and the board of the War Memorial Center; and, be it
