Minutes note: Ms. Carlen Hatala said back in 2018 there were interested parties in this building and the state preservation office said that this building could be considered for the National Register. Parking was an important attribute and the library was built during a time of creating local libraries, rather than requiring patrons to come downtown to the Central Library. There was a new time period of modernism, with approachable, user-friendly and one story tall with the use of new materials. The new libraries were all sited along mass transit lines for easy access by patrons. The design is mid-century modern with an exploration of concrete as part of a feature of the building, self-rusting steel in public view. The architect was Von Grossmann, Burroughs & Van Lanen Inc. with Von Grossmann as the principal designer; he designed a number of schools and other buildings. Ms. Hatala thanked the nominators for the study on mid-century modern they provided. Ms. Hatala noted that not many of these buildings have been nominated. In 2018, the Dept. of City Development put together a proposal for this building with the requirement that the building be preserved and there be a taxable use. Staff recommends temporary designation based upon e-1, e-5, e-6 and e-7.
Mr. Jarosz moved to convene a public hearing, seconded by Ms. Pieper Eisenbrown. There were no objections.

Ms. Hatala said there were slight modifications for computer technology, but it appears to be pretty much the same exterior.
