Title
Resolution relating to private contributions for City purchase and installation of video surveillance cameras in the public right-of-way.
Analysis
This resolution provides that any private contribution to the City for the purchase and installation of pole-mounted video surveillance cameras in the public right-of-way shall be received, deposited and expended in accordance with Milwaukee Code of Ordinances procedures for private contributions. It further provides that a contribution for surveillance cameras shall be accepted by the City only upon the donor entering into an agreement with the City to pay, on an annual basis, all costs associated with operating and maintaining the cameras.

This resolution also stipulates that, whenever the donor suggests or requests that a video surveillance camera be installed at a particular location, the Commissioner of Public Works, in consultation with the Chief of Police, shall determine whether that location is feasible and beneficial, and may direct that the camera be installed at an alternative location, subject to the consent of the donor.

Whereas, On May 15, 2007, the City of Milwaukee awarded a contract for installation of 15 pole-mounted video surveillance cameras on the public right-of-way at various locations throughout the city; and

Whereas, The Video Surveillance Initiative, as it is known, is being funded through a combination of grant funds and capital funds (Police Department and Department of Public Works); and

Whereas, The Common Council finds the use of video surveillance cameras to be an effective tool to deter criminal activity, solve crimes and enhance public safety; and

Whereas, The Common Council would welcome private cash contributions to expand this video surveillance camera system; now, therefore, be it
