Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Fire Department to accept the donation of up to 18 thermal imaging cameras from the Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee Foundation, Inc. The Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee Foundation is currently engaged in a fundraising effort to raise money for these cameras, which can be used to assist firefighters in gauging the location and intensity of a fire from outside a burning building.
Body
Whereas, Thermal imaging cameras can be used to assist firefighters in gauging the location and intensity of a fire from outside a building, thereby increasing the probability that the fire can be promptly and effectively extinguished with minimal harm to property or human life; and
Whereas, For these reasons, acquisition of thermal imaging cameras would be beneficial to the Milwaukee Fire Department; and
Whereas, Because thermal imaging technology is expensive (approximately $18,000 per camera) and the City of Milwaukee has limited financial resources for new equipment such as this, the Milwaukee Fire Department has so far been unable to acquire any thermal imaging cameras; and
Whereas, The Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee Foundation, Inc., ("Kiwanis Foundation") has started a fundraising campaign to raise private money for the purchase of thermal imaging cameras for the Milwaukee Fire Department; and
Whereas, To date, the Kiwanis Foundation has raised funds sufficient for the purchase of one thermal imaging camera; and
Whereas, The initial goal of the Kiwanis Foundation project is to raise enough funds to provide one thermal imaging camera to each of the 6 Fire Department battalion chiefs, one for the deputy fire chief and one for the Heavy Urban Rescue Team, for a total of 8 cameras; and
