This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works and the appropriate City officials to enter into an agreement with Goodwill Industries to allow Goodwill to place a clothing donation center at each of the City's 2 sanitation self-help centers. It also directs DPW to submit a written report to the Common Council regarding the success of the clothing donation centers 6 months from the adoption of this resolution.


BODY:
Whereas, Goodwill Industries provides jobs to City of Milwaukee residents through handicapped job placement as well as neighborhood need at 7 locations within the city, including the new commerce center at 2620 West North Avenue; and

Whereas, Goodwill Industries is the largest textile recycler in the southeastern Wisconsin region and processed 15 million pounds of textiles from the area in 1997; and

Whereas, Site visits indicate that large quantities of clothing are being brought to both of the City of Milwaukee's sanitation self-help centers; and

Whereas, A 1992 waste composition study indicated that textiles comprise more than 6% of the city's residental waste stream; and

Whereas, Goodwill Industries has agreed to place a clothing donation center at each of the City of Milwaukee's sanitation self-help centers as part of the City's BeSmart Waste Reduction Campaign, and it is estimated that the project could divert up to 500 tons of City refuse from landfill each year; and

Whereas, These clothing donation centers will be aesthetically pleasing, have appropriate signage, and will be locked for security; and

Whereas, Goodwill Industries will collect from the 2 centers "on call" from the City; and
