Title

Resolution relating to the installation of lighting in the alley bounded West Highland Boulevard, West State Street, North 29th Street and North 33rd Street.

Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of Public Works to install additional lighting in the alley abutting the property at 3109 West Highland Boulevard.

Body

Whereas, The alley bounded by West Highland Boulevard, West State Street, North 29th Street and North 33rd Street (Alley) is an “L” shaped alley in the Concordia Neighborhood; and

 

Whereas, The Alley is approximately 930 feet in length; and

 

Whereas, The City has installed 4 LED lights to provide illumination in the Alley; and

 

Whereas, There have been a number of reports of crime in the Alley including vehicle entry, theft, gunfire, drug dealing and sexual activity; and

 

Whereas, Periodic enhanced patrols by the Police Department have not resulted in a lasting reduction in crime in the Alley; and

 

Whereas, The Police Department has determined that the lighting in the Alley is inadequate; and

 

Whereas, There can be significant costs to adjacent property owners for property-related crime; and

 

Whereas, In June, 2024, the local Common Council member requested additional lighting in the Alley to help address on-going criminal activity; and

 

Whereas; In July, 2024, the Department of Public Works determined that no additional lighting in the Alley was warranted; and

 

Whereas, Nuisance activity has continued in the Alley; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works is directed to install additional lighting in the alley abutting the property at 3109 West Highland Boulevard.
