Analysis
This resolution expresses the Common Council's opposition to the recommendation of the U.S. Department of Defense to close the U.S. Air Force Reserve 440th Airlift Wing located at the Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport.
Body
Whereas, The U.S. Department of Defense recently recommended closing the U.S. Air Force Reserve 440th Airlift Wing located at the Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport; and

Whereas, The federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission will review the nationwide base closures recommended by the Defense Department and issue a final report of its own recommendations later this year or early 2006, which are subject to approval by the President and Congress; and

Whereas, It is estimated that closing the 440th Airlift Wing would result in a net loss of 266 military and civilian jobs; and

Whereas, The annual economic impact of the 440th Airlift Wing on the Milwaukee community is estimated at $90 million; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee recognizes the significant economic and cultural assets to the community that the U.S. Air Force Reserve 440th Airlift Wing provides; and

Whereas, The preservation and future growth of the 440th Airlift Wing as an active military facility will directly impact the future of the community; and

Whereas, The residents of the City of Milwaukee view the presence of the Airlift Wing in their community as a source of great pride for the role it has played in America's defense and history; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council expresses its strong opposition to the closure of the U.S. Air Force Reserve 440th Airlift Wing recommended by the Department of Defense; and, be it
