Analysis

This resolution adopts the Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Public Schools relating to the placement of School Resource Officers in Milwaukee Public Schools.

 

Body

Whereas, Beginning in January 2024, state law requires that at least 25 School Resource Officers (SROs), who are police officers provided by the Milwaukee Police Department, shall be present at Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) during school hours; and

 

Whereas, A Milwaukee County judge ruled that officers must appear in schools by February 27, 2025, and that the tax-funded cost to deploy SROs shall be evenly split between the City of Milwaukee and MPS; and

 

Whereas, In order to work in the SRO program at MPS schools, officers must complete a 40-hour National Association of School Resource Officers basic course; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the attached Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Public Schools relating to the placement of School Resource Officers in Milwaukee Public Schools is adopted; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the proper City officials are authorized and directed to execute this agreement on behalf of the City of Milwaukee.
