Resolution directing the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division to support passage of legislation repealing provisions of state law that place financial institutions ahead of employes in the priority list of those who have filed liens against bankrupt companies.
Analysis
This resolution directs the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division to support passage of legislation repealing the provisions of 1999 Wisconsin Act 9 which, among its provisions, placed financial institutions ahead of employes on the priority list of those who have filed liens against bankrupt companies.
Body
Whereas, On October 27, 1999, the Wisconsin State Legislature enacted 1999 Wisconsin Act 9 which, among its provisions, placed financial institutions ahead of employes in the priority list of those who have filed liens against bankrupt companies; and
Whereas, This change has led to extreme hardship for workers throughout the State of Wisconsin, including 600 former employes of Pfister-Vogel Tannery, A.L. Gebbach and Steeltech; and
Whereas, This change asks all people to accept the premise that human labor becomes part of the collateral for loans made by financial institutions, a position that is illogical, unethical and immoral; and
Whereas, On January 19, 2001, 2001 AB 34 was introduced to the Wisconsin State Assembly, a bill, in effect, repealing the provisions of 1999 Wisconsin Act 9 and the injustices it created; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division, is directed to support passage of legislation such as 2001 AB 34 which would repeal the provisions of 1999 Wisconsin Act 9 enumerated in this resolution.
