Analysis
This resolution designates April through September of each year, commencing in 2020, as Milwaukee Promise Zone months.
Body
Whereas, The Milwaukee Promise Zone initiative focuses on creating jobs, increasing economic activity, improving educational opportunities, leveraging private investment, and reducing violent crime through a place-based strategy in “Promise Zone” areas; and
Whereas, The City’s current Promise Zones are in the Greater Old North, Near Southside, North Division/Harambee, and Washington Park neighborhoods, with a satellite Promise Zone in the Woodlands neighborhood; and
Whereas, The City and its Promise Zone partners undertake a variety of activities and events to promote Milwaukee Promise Zone goals, particularly in the warmer weather months of April through September annually; and
Whereas, In 2018, the Promise Zone initiative led nearly 450 people in Promise Zone areas to find employment, and a childhood education initiative was established for children up to 3 years of age; and
Whereas, Promise Zone neighborhoods have been beautified with organized clean-ups, garden plantings, public art projects and the placement of new refuse receptacles to curb litter, and Milwaukee Promise Zone signage has been installed as a physical reminder that the City has made a promise to that community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that April through September of each year, commencing in 2020, are designated as Milwaukee Promise Zone months; and, be it
Further Resolved, That City departments are directed to assist as necessary to make events related to the Milwaukee Promise Zone initiative a success.
