This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee’s support for passage of proposed State legislation known as the 2023 Safe Roads Save Lives Act, or substantially similar legislation, to allow for the use of automated traffic enforcement cameras for the purpose of speed, red-light running and accident reduction at certain qualifying intersections, and amendments to all relevant statutes to provide additional tools to curb the epidemic of reckless driving per the recommendations of the City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force.

Whereas, The 2023 Safe Roads Save Lives Act recently reintroduced to the state legislature by Sen. La Tonya Johnson, D-Milwaukee, Rep. LaKeshia Myers, D-Milwaukee and Rep. Todd Novak, R-Dodgeville is expected to allow the City to use automated traffic enforcement cameras for the purpose of speed, red-light running and accident reduction at certain qualifying intersections; and
Whereas, The City began lobbying the state more than 20 years ago for authority to enact ordinances permitting the use of traffic photo enforcement systems to deter and detect drivers who fail to stop at red-light traffic signals or who speed, with the adoption of Common Council File Number 010845 on November 6, 2001; and
Whereas, The Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division was directed to lobby for the use of automated traffic enforcement cameras as part of the Division’s 2021-22 Legislative Package by Common Council File Number 200668, adopted...
